Facing Your Fears

Some of us may not be able to relate to David; it seems like he was confident throughout his life, like he never had a moment of doubt. While the Bible doesn't tell us about his insecurity and doubts we can probably guess that a kid that young would have moments of not feeling good enough, especially since he wasn't the favorite among his brothers. There is another story in the Bible about a man that lived before David, though, who had to be confident but dealt with insecurity about being a great leader. His name was Joshua.

Joshua was a servant of Moses, who was one of the greatest leaders in the Bible. Moses performed miracles, helped save his people from slavery and he was a man that walked closely with God. So when Moses came close to th end of his life the people of Israel knew it would take a strong leader to take Moses' place. After Moses passed away God came and spoke to Joshua; He would be the one to take Moses' place. You can probably imagine how overwhelmed he must have felt. His leader just died and he would be taking on the role of leading an entire nation! He was probably sad. Scared. Doubtful. God reassured Joshua over and over again, "be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua used the words of God for encouragement, moved past his fear and he became a great leader as well.

We will face our own fears and challenges as we go through this life; David faced off with Goliath, and Joshua faced a fear of failure. David demonstrated supreme God confidence, but Joshua needed a little more encouragement from God to be more comfortable in his new role. Whatever your fear, whatever your challenge, try to be as courageous as David and Joshua were. As we learned at youth night, we have to face our fears like we can't lose! One of our favorite City Church worship songs tells us that "fear is just a liar running out of breath." God is always with us, and fear never comes from God...often we learn that we can be the legends God made us to be if we don't let fear stop us from getting there!

What are some of your biggest fears? What do you think it will take to overcome them? Tell the group about a time when you faced your fears successfully.

This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.

Joshua 1:9

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
