David had complete confidence in God, and it poured out into everything he did. Even as a shephard boy while he was being ignored, he was doing his job well because of his confidence. The Bible tells us that while David was watching the sheep that both a lion and a bear came after them! Yet, because of David's supreme confidence he was able to conquer in both of those situations and defeat both animals. David's confidence in God was his secret weapon.
This God confidence was put to the test again, but in an even bigger moment; this time the test of David's God confidence came in the form of a nine foot tall, over 300 pound giant named Goliath. David's people, the Israelites, were at war with an army called the Philistines and Goliath was their champion (their best fighter). Goliath had heavy duty armor and weapons, and all of the Israelites were terrified of fighting him. The Bible tells us that for 40 days Goliath taunted the Israelites, walking back and forth and insulting them. David was coming down to bring bread to his brothers and heard Goliath disrespecting his people and his God; he knew he had to do something about it. David was about 16 years old, still a young man, but his confidence was high. After all, David did defeat a bear and a lion in order to protect his sheep; he believed more than anything that he could defeat Goliath. After begging to go defend Israel and to the doubt of his brothers, Saul king of Israel allowed David to go fight.
When Goliath saw this scrawny kid come out armed with nothing but a slig-shot and laughed! But David didn't waver. "The Lord who rescued me from the claws of the lion and the bear will rescue me from this Philistine!" David said. They both rushed out at each other, and all it took David was one stone. He swung it with all his might and it hit Goliath straight in the head, taking him out. With the Philistines saw that their champion was defeated they all ran away. David's confidence was indeed his secret weapon; and because of it he saved his entire nation!
What does the story of David and Goliath teach us about "God confidence?" Do you think your age ever gets in the way of your confidence? What are some things we can do to resist that thinking?
For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.
