“The Joy of Surrender”

March 17, 2019

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. - 2 Corinthians 12:9

We live in a world that fears vulnerability, that lives behind the filter, and that believes that power only comes from a perception of perfection. In our faith journey, however, we learn that our point of weakness is often where we find our greatest strength.

Jesus gives us this secret: his power is made perfect in our weakness. When we acknowledge our flaws, our failures, and our shortcomings, God is able to meet us there. He is able to do through us what we could never do on our own. And in that process, he is able to lift us up higher than we ever thought we could go. When we bow low, he lifts us high, and we know that our promotion is from him.

This is the joy that comes in surrender, the joy that Jesus lay a hold of. When he surrendered to the cross, it was for “the joy set before him,” (Hebrews 12:2). This joy came from a place of faith in the Father to do what only he could do. As we’ve learned in our “Surrender” series, on the other side of his surrender was significance.

When we choose to surrender our will, our plans, and our comfort to God’s will, his plans and his pleasure, we experience a release of joy. When we stop trying to take control and surrender to God’s sovereignty, we become freed up to receive fullness of joy.

This is the joy set before us--that even when we don’t understand, even when things look dark, we can trust that “he who began a good work in us is faithful to see it through to completion,” (Philippians 1:6).

In a world where vulnerability, failure, and weakness are feared, we as believers can become a powerful force by embracing the place of surrender. When we embrace surrender, we will  experience the joy that comes from knowing who we are in Christ, and that his power is made perfect in our weakness.

Prayer points:

  • Pray that God would meet you in your weakness and allow his power to be evident through you.

  • Pray that God would free you from trying to control and hide behind perfectionism.

  • Ask God to empower you to embrace the place of surrender and experience fullness of joy.
